Speech Pathologists assess, diagnose and treat people who have communication difficulties and people who have difficulties chewing and/or swallowing. Problems with communication may involve the production of speech sounds, the understanding of spoken language, the appropriate use of language, stuttering or voice problems.
The Speech Pathology Service at the Western Region Health Centre is provided for children up to school entry.
Referrals
When to refer to Western Region Health Centre Speech Pathology
A referral should be made to speech pathology if:
• You or your family members are concerned about your child’s speech or language
• Your child is having difficulty understanding what is said to him or her
• Your child is not using single words by 18 months of age
• Your child is not using 2 word sentences at 2 1⁄2 years of age
• Your child’s speech is difficult to understand at 3 years of age
• Your child’s speech is nasal or husky
• Your child’s speech is hesitant / dysfluent
Who can refer to Speech Pathology at the Western Region Health Centre
Children can be referred to the Speech Pathologist by
• Parents/carers
• General Practitioners
• Maternal and child health nurses
• Kindergarten and nursery teachers
• Other professionals and community health organisations
Speech pathology at the Western Region Health Centre is based at the Braybrook Site.

BUS ROUTES: From Footscray take Bus 220 along
Ashley St until Churchill Ave, then catch Bus 408 from Highpoint which runs up Churchill Ave. From Sunshine take Bus 215 or 220 along Ballarat Rd to Vine St and walk up to Churchill Ave (approx 600m).
